Some thoughts on respect and on siblings...
RESPECT—find out what it means to your loved one! S/he most likely
lived a long and
full life and
may have seemed at one time that they knew all the answers. They were
the ones we turned to when we had a skinned knee or needed help, advice or….
money.
Now it seems the roles are reversed and honestly it STINKS, and that’s okay
to feel this
way. Who doesn’t want mom and dad to remain they way we remember them
growing
up, but it doesn’t mean that you are the mom and dad and they are the kids
now—no
matter how forgetful and needy they might be at times. You are still their
child. Period.
Please speak to your loved one with respect. Honor thy father and
mother—sound
familiar? Believe him or her when she tells you something---but also take a
good look
and see if what she is saying is true. Does she really manage okay with
the groceries
on her own?
A note on SIBLINGS: If you are reading this, chances are you are the
primary caregiver
for your loved one. Your loved one needs you and your siblings, if you have
any, so
please take care of yourself! Need reassurance or support? Seek out a social
worker;
that’s what we’re here for. Seek out a support group. Seek out the support
of siblings,
church members, and others. Please don’t try to be the martyr and do things
alone.
